#4: We're stressed, burnt out and suicidal. This is why.
Toxic obsessions, giving fewer fxcks and the cutest Old MacDonald rendition you've ever seen
I know we drank to WandaVision last time, but I'm still reeling over the finale so lemme fix a Purple People Eater in honour of my girl Agatha Harkness. Now let’s get to it…
So I was browsing through Twitter the other day, minding everybody’s business, when I came across a tweet that pissed me off.
On the surface, this seems like the kind of harmless feel-good platitude that deserves the 10k likes it got. But for anyone who has ever been the obsessed overachiever this chasing goal after goal like this post suggests - you know exactly how harmful a sentiment like this can be.
In fact, I’d blame this mindset for singlehandedly creating the work-obsessed, highly depressed and suicidal millennial generation we have today. It will stress you out, burn you out and kill you. It’s toxic.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t aim to improve and achieve your goals - but you shouldn’t be obsessive about it. Instead, be obsessed with learning to be content in the moment. Even if things aren’t perfect, even if you’re not exactly where you want to be, even if you think your life is shxt.
It’s a lot harder to accept and embrace your current circumstances than it is to chase the next big goal. However, when you do, you’ll find yourself a lot happier for it, and a lot more appreciative of the small wins - which makes life a lot more fulfilling.
Something for you to check out…
I love the book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. It’s about acknowledging that your time and mental capacity (aka fxcks to give) is limited - so you need to focus them on most important things, and say fxck off to everything else. Check out this awesome summary done by Mark himself on his YouTube channel. (PS His channel is amazing, so check that out too!)
What I’m up to these days…
Quitting things, saying no to things and taking lots of time off. These have been big dreams for me for years, but I didn’t make them goals until 2021. And the steps I’m taking are actually working! I know a lot of us struggle with achieving this…so I’ll be sharing more of how I’m doing it soon.
OMG, have you seen this?!
A little cuteness to start your week. Thank me later.
